Christmas on Halloween

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The 400nl and 600nl games on FTP at 11:30pm (830am East Coast US) delivered more than Christmas. The best 600nl FR table I've seen on FTP in 2 months. The best regular live ones all on at the same time....spewing. It's a fucking miracle.

This one below is less spew and more pwned.

This one is just fish on fish war

PokerStars Steps and Full Tilt 600nl

I was trying to find a screenshot of the Step 6 I busted out of but it's been a couple days now so it's def not possible to see the results because it's an SNG. Basically, I played a Heads Up Double Shootout for 3,375 FPPs (PokerStars Frequent Player Points) satellite to the Sunday 1.5 Million. For the noobs, a heads up double shootout consists of two heads up tournaments within a single tournament. The winner of each of the 2 HU tournaments will meet to play the final HU tournament where the winner of that 2nd and final HU tournament wins, in this case, the $215 ticket to the PokerStars Sunday 1.5 Million.

So I won both of those HU tournaments. I then unregistered and used the 215 T$ to register for a Step 4. I'm not going to explain the whole PS Steps but here http://www.pokerstars.com/wsop/qualify/steps/ is a link to the details. Basically PokerStars ripped off PartyPoker's "Steps" Sit and Go tournament structure which more or less makes it extremely easy to satellite into large buyin live poker tournaments. I played a Step 4 for 215 T$ and finished top 2 into a Step 5, a $700 buyin SNG. I then immediately registered for a Step 5 and finished top 2 in that for a Step 6, a $2,100 buyin SNG where top 4 of 10 will receive a "package" to PokerStars Asian Pacific Poker Tour: Manila Main Event. The pacage consists of an approximately $2500 USD buyin tournament, $1650 spending cash for flight and other expenses, and a PokerStars suite for 4-5 days at the casino where the tournament is being held along with some PokerStars luggage full of PS clothes, hats, etc. (I know cuz PTero has won fucking 4 of them so far...sigh)

I finished 6/10 in the Step 6 after getting in a 4.5k stack with AQcc against a MP open shove with AJo at the 200/400/25 level and obviously the Jhi flop cripples me. K2ss shoves the BTN 2 rounds later for like less than 2BB, AJo calls from the BB, and obviously I have a snowballs chance in hell of winning that.

*CLIFF NOTES* Turned 3,375 FPPs into $2,100 Step 6 entry in one night only to have AQ

Other than that I have been just ruthlessly grinding MSNL on FTP. I'm running around 2ptbb/100 over 30k hands at 400nl (which is around 12BIs). At 600nl I've been getting fucked. The thing about these higher and higher levels is, you need a strategy. Obviously you have to apply a counter-strategy at lower limits as well but most of it is almost common sense. At 600nl I've noticed, for the first time since starting playing freerolls and 4 tabling 10nl FR, the need to study the thought process of the regular players and the normal play of the games and implement a counter-strategy. Considering how relatively new this higher level of gameplay is to me atm, I'm really not very upset with my results. I made a a couple plays which were high variance at best but I also run bad...which to be perfectly honest, I'm used too at this point. I've run significantly under EV for so many months now I don't even know if I've ever ran over 0EV for a month in my lifetime. Like I've said before, even samples as large as regular mega multi-tablers have....it's never going to be close enough to infinity for some people to be "luckier" than others over what we generally consider to be a long-run sample. I can say with absolute certainty I have been extremely unlucky (relative to 0EV) over my lifetime sample.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

This graph is my lifetime sample at 600nl FR. Like I said, I'm reasonably pleased with the way I've played so far, especially given the learning curve that literally everyone has and will have if they make it to this level. Being stuck almost 2 buyins under EV is pretty gross over not even 1k hands but whatever. If I had to depend on winning at showdown to make $ in this game I would have been broke long ago. Since I run like absolute dogshit consistantly (and I really don't talk about it as much as it warrants) the only other options are to give up or boost these fuckings bitches for their money using brute force.

This graph was posted on the 2p2 forums a few months ago and describes my perception of the game and serves as a graphical display of my advantage in no limit hold em games more effectively than any winrate(s) or alike.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

This graph goes from 4 tabling 25nl 6max to 50nl 6max to 50nl FR to 100nl FR (I'd guess makes up this middle 50-60% of the entire graph) until, after gradually adding tables as I became comfortable, I was eventually playing 16 tables of 200nl FR.

Weekend

Even if I had a reason to force myself to find something to write about here I wouldn't have anything. Since my last post of any substance I have been focused on one thing...MSNL on FTP. Today (Saturday night in the US) I added a 600nl table that actually was better (fish:reg ratio) than any 400nl tables that were running. I ended up making almost a BI in under 100 hands there which is always nice to have that padding of profit when taking shots. 400nl was worse than it should've been today. For a Saturday night in the US the games should have been outstanding (like they were Friday) but they just weren't. I was stuck slightly over 4BI this morning only to get it all back and more this afternoon (which is the early morning hours for the US).

This hand here is pretty interesting actually. His 3bet sizing is horrible obviously, because he is a fish, but the turn is the interesting part. When he bet/calls the flop out of position in a 3bet pot, he ALWAYS has an overpair. When a fish 3bets from the blinds his range is ALWAYS skewed towards AK/JJ+ (and they probly just flat call JJ to be honest).

The turn is an awkward spot because obv AA is in his range but so are (postflop) QQ+. With my hand, anything short of a turn bet is beyond unacceptable. I decided to make a snap shove because I have to bet obv, and betting like 1/2 or 2/3 is just retarded when the hearts complete so I thin shoving or betting small to induce a call or shove from QhQx or KhKx, though that's less likely than a call if I make a snap overshove. If anyone capable of making a response to this spot is interested....I'd be more than glad to hear some opinions.

First 20k hands

This is a graph of not only my first 20k sample of my stake but also my first 20k sample at 400nl.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The games were outstanding tonight (std for a friday night obv). This one fish was just an epic playmaster. He was up a quick 50BBs then lost at 150BBs to one of the top 5 regs at 400nl on FTP. He reloaded for full and not long after....this.

Obv flat calling that draw heavy of a flop is a high variance line but there was EASILY enough equity in the line I took to induce spew from someone who literally has like ATC here. With hands that are worth looking over most of the time it's so situational that analyzing hands in a vacuum rarely results in an understanding of the most +EV line at the time.
My last post was ~12k hands into my 400nl stake. Before my next session I had a few discussions with the likes of Ptero, Kelisitaan, and Epipen about adjusting to a few new problems I was finding at this higher level. Out of respect for Kelisitaan's request I won't be going into as much detail as I would normally. How stupid would I be to have one of the biggest MSNL winners on the hardest online poker room in the world to talk to about the game and then fuck it up for myself....not likely. That's the easy part of the game.

I'm specifically using PokerGrapher instead of PokerEV because PG allows me to select the specific 6,000 hands I've played since adjusting a few things. These are the results.

400nl

7.28 hours and 13.92ptbb/100 and what's disgusting is how not over 0EV I'm running. I'm losing $ with KK over the sample and I'm running 2BI under EV which would put me up 9.5BI in 2 days before rakeback. Conversely, I have won more buyins with AA than normal but it's much more a function of the higher average aggression factor (aggressive preflop big pot nlhe) between nitty 50 and 100nl regs and aggrospew 400nl regs than just running good. There are live ones at every level but i shit you not there are, not more by quantity but quality, at 400nl than any level under it (excluding play chips). Some of the live ones I've seen in just 2 days in the 400nl FR games on FTP spew buyins harder and faster playing mindlessly aggro with worse ranges for significant amounts of money than any I have ever played with. Even better, the regs are so aggro, esp preflop, it's impossible for an experienced player and above average hand reader to not exploit the living shit out of them.

I shouldn't have to even mention this sample is too small to consider but I wouldn't post it if the results weren't a relatively accurate description of how the way I play can exploit players thinking on generally higher levels of NLHE.

The WW

Today I put in my first 400nl FR session of my poker career. Before I get to the results I want to give some self analysis. If I'm perfectly honest I was out of my comfort zone for the first 500 hands or so. Not because of the money as much as because I know they players are better than the players I'm used to destroying for the past year and a half at LSNL. There were several players, including Andrew Song, GrandMelon, and Mektin, etc who I know for a fact are all very solid NLHE players and because of that are huge winners. I actually talk to Andrew Song somewhat regularly on AIM. He is one of the better players at these levels though his extreme aggression seems to get the better of him on occasion and I think he would admit that.

As for myself, I feel really good about how I'm playing and how I'm adjusting to this relatively big move. I'm used to being 110% comfortable with every regular in the LSNL games on PokerStars and my ability to pwn the shit out of them. Not having that comfort level this morning was extremely awkward at first. I ended up putting in a 1k hand session and then just now finished a 500 hand session before I go meet Ptero down at Merewether beach across the street.

This hand was the biggest losing hand (other than a gross 3b pot with ASong he flopped midset) where I completely soulfucked this retard and he tries to rep QQ+ having no idea how strong my hand is. Well played fishcake.

Last night I talked to someone (admittedly he's a pretty stupid individual in general) who basically said he had doubt that my results at LSNL levels (destroying) would carry up to the MSNL levels where players are generally much better fundamental players and capable of adjusting to my style better. I laughed and said "we'll see". Well now we can all see...below.

Upswing, 400nl, and Matrix SNGs on FTP

I've been running pretty sick hot for most of the past week and a half and it couldn't have come at a much better time. The 400nl stake process is finalized as of today and I will go from grinding LSNL to MSNL in a matter of a few hours. So, obviously, I'm looking forward to that. For a long time (relative to my poker career) I have known I am capable of beating higher games than I've been playing. Since I had to cash out over $5k from my original $500 stake into 25nl 6m on FTP (which I turned into over $10k going from 4 tbling 25nl 6m to 16 tbling 200nl FR) it has taken me much longer to get to MSNL that it should have. Obviously I would rather have 100% of myself when I have an edge in the MSNL games I play but but time that this 50%-50% stake will gain me in terms of moving up in stakes is a far better decision than keeping 100% of myself in lower games and living off/moving up with the same LSNL roll.

I realized a long time ago there aren't many players in the full spectrum of poker players who should be staked. On the one side, most players who would take a stake are not good enough players to warrant being staked, especially into MSNL+. Conversely, most players on the other end of the spectrum who are actually good or great players most often wont need a stake because they have a working bankroll of their own.

Now this explains better why I really feel differently than most people about being staked. Most people who get staked feel a sense of pride and almost brag about it. Don't get me wrong, I fully appreciate the opportunity I'm being given and that what I've done in poker warrants me a staking of this size, but that isn't the point. The point is that being staked isn't something someone should be happy or proud about. The way I look at it is relatively pessimistic (like most things) but, like I've said in previous posts, that state of mind is what's got me to where I am. If you're a good player, you shouldn't want to have less than 100% of yourself ever. Selling %s in tournaments is the same thing but a little more reasonable because of the nature of mtt variance and most people wanting to or actually playing tournaments they don't have a proper roll for (100BI+).

Today Full Tilt unveiled their new SNG format called Matrix. The details can be found here http://www.fulltiltpoker.com/matrix-tournaments-details. They're pretty interesting and although it makes cashing less profitable, it makes it much more likely a player will cash and also seems to lower variance somewhat. I haven't put much thought into exactly how it impacts the game theory of the SNG other than that but I just fucked around with them and turned my old FTP account balance of $6.50 into $100 just testing out the new format within 3 Matrix SNGs.

I'm going to take a nap while I'm datamining FTP and waiting for Boosted J to get back online when he wakes up (he is helping me swap some $). Mad thanks to Justin for the help, he's a good guy and a better NLHE player. Word.

Metagame

Original Video - More videos at TinyPic

If you haven't seen this yet...you need to. I just saw Kos link this in the SSNL forum so I watched it for around the 10th time. It's pretty obvious he did this for metagame purposes (if for a specific metagame purpose I have no idea what). It's obvious that he is a raging attention whore but it's also pretty obvious that he is at least somewhat if not significantly more wealthy and comfortable (financially) in life because of the spectacle he creates for himself. Given that, I can't blame him for a second and actually admire his ability to not just maintain this absurd composure....but actually adjust his personality to be most profitable in his environment so he can continue doing it naturally (or close to it). That's something I realized when I was a young kid waiting for school to start in middle school. There were certain things I wanted and in order to get them I needed to...not be someone I wasn't....but be someone who can adjust optimally in any and every environment I found. It's funny now to think how I really was conceptualizing this when I was maybe 10-12 years old waiting under the big concrete staircase with everyone else for the bell to ring so we could go up to class but I've always been one to think very differently and most people don't know it cuz they can't see it. Anyways....it worked.

If you get nothing else from this video realize that he is thinking of ways to manipulate his image (metagame) in the minds of his current and future villains. Doing this is profitable. Some of the best MSNL players online do it and it makes them a LOT of money. Assuming whoever is reading this is at the level in NLHE where they can realistically think about using metagame to increase their winrate (which comes after learning to stop calling 3bets oop out of spite imo).....think about how you can (granted you dont have a national TV audience) most effectively adjust your perception, in the most profitable way, to the people you play NLHE with most.

Silverchair and pathetically last minute rebels

Last night I went next door to introduce myself the the Australian surfer kids who live in the townhouse next to me. They were listening to loud music including Metallica and Jane's Addiction and I could smell cigarettes. I've been pretty clear in the past that imo people who smoke cigarettes are very close to always able to find weed if not having it on them at any given time. That is to say, if you'll smoke a cigarette you probably smoke weed or at least have in the past which makes it likely you know where to get some. So I spent a couple hours over talking to these drunk Australian guys, between the ages of 24 and 28, doing everything from pounding extra dry eurodonk beer and avoiding uneducated questions about American politics and the war in Iraq. Meaning, not only are they clueless about the topics they're curious about, but so am I. The difference is, unlike so many dumb asses I know who talk politics like they have half a clue, I don't talk about shit I don't know about. There's nothing more pathetic than hearing people talk about politics, keeping in mind I know just as little if not less ([ ] coincidence), who blatantly have no clue about the inner workings of US or global politics any further than what they see or hear the TV or radio. It's hard to believe so many people are stupid enough to really think they have any idea about the goings on of something that is so important to be kept primarily a secret. The only thing I'm saying I know better than these people is the fact that I, and they, don't know shit...relatively. /rant....oh and btw....one of the guys called my cell today from the driveway to drop off some Australian weed....cost? zero. easy game imo.

So other than learning my age group in Australia will grow up having a negative view of Americans largely due to the war in Iraq and that they are somehow more racist than old southerners from the US....they told me the story of this band Silverchair. Apparently this band started in the garage of a house right down the street from where I'm sitting typing this up right now across from Merewether beach in Newcastle, Australia. I looked up their most well known song and found it to be one I have heard several times, especially on those streaming radio stations online I listen to. There's one line from the song, called Tomorrow, I specifically remember replaying in my head since listening to it last.

"You say that money, isn't everything,
but I'd like to see you live without it,"

-Silverchair

....be smarter than most people, luckily, it's not hard.

Leroi Moore

If you're aware that the DMB is gone forever because Leroi Moore died then you'll appreciate at least the first 3 minutes of this video. Having been to a half dozen shows, including back to back nights at Fenway Park in the summer of 2006, this video reminds me of how far and away from the rest they were at the execution of the concert.

7ptbb/100 and Boston's 104.1 WBCN

Its 10 pm here and I just shut down my last session for the day. Over around 12k hands since I got here to Australia, between the hotel room in Sydney and the internet being installed here at the house yesterday, I'm running slightly over 7ptbb/100. Needless to say, this are going well. I haven't started 400nl yet for a few reasons I'm not going to go into here (at least not yet).

Tonight I had dinner at The Beaches hotel and bar across the street again. I had the blue eyed cod to follow the kangaroo pot pie I had there a few nights before. For lunch while I was at this mall where the grocery store is I had some authentic chinese food which was good but extremely unusual. This is again one of those things I'm writing up to remind myself later when I look back at this more than expecting anyone is bored enough to enjoy reading about the cultural cuisine experiences I'm having.

Since moving into the Boston apartment with Ptero and our 6 other roommates (all Northeastern students) I've been listening to streaming radio while I put in sessions. WBCN in Boston is easily my favorite station, but there's a station in Las Vegas I got to like and one out of San Fransisco on the same CBS streaming network that is similar to both.

Tonight I was listening to the notorious line-steppers Opie and Anthony on WBCN. They were discussing a lawsuit a recent guest has pending against their co-host Jim Norton. Norton is quickly becoming one of the more respected comedians imo. He has the dirty mind of an early What the hell happened to me? Adam Sandler and besides his retarded appearance he is extremely unique. Ok the point of the story is that this lawyer is suing Norton for berating him on air. Apparently he called the lawyer a whore, among other things including, "The lawyer says Norton defamed him when he called him a "f-----g whore" and a "lawyer who nobody wants to f---." He also said the star of HBO's "Down and Dirty with Jim Norton" called him a "phony" at least 10 times and joked that the chicken crossed the road to avoid having sex with Hollander." {Credit of NYTimes.com} HAHAHAHAHAHA......nh sir, nh.

Today, after a motherfucking week past the installation date scheduled weeks before I left the US to arrive at this sick beach house in Australia Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
, the interwebs is finally up and running.

I really don't even want to think about how pissed off I was or how I broke my own unofficial rule to not bring the flawless assholeability I learned growing up in Boston here to the Australian continent. However when I explained to this fuck that not having internet for a week is costing collectively thousands of dollars in value between Ptero and I and he assured me it we would be online last Thursday night (Wednesday in the US, it's 15 hours ahead of the US east coast here) only to end up having his slut assistant tell me the following Tuesday when I tried to find out what the FUCK was going on she tells me he's on the phone. I call back not 2 minutes later and a different guy tells me he's been out of the office for the past 2 days with the flu. Now I'm not exactly the passive type so after a few less than calm conversations from assistant to manager I ended up having them hire a 3rd party network technician being sent on Thursday (Today in AUS, Wed in US) and Pacnet (the cocksucking ISP) covering the $299 installation fee. I really didn't want to have to do that shit but now I realize how badly passive people get dicked around like a fucking joke.

Now that I'm finally back online I really don't have much to do other than catch up on playing, emails, and the segue into MSNL. This place I'm living in Australia is absolutely unreal. I'm not one to be amazed by scenery like most bored fucks are but the train ride from Sydney back here to Newcastle Monday evening, between the waterfalls, valleys, mountains, and view of Sydney's famous opera house and bridge but....I definitely appreciated that for being something outstanding which most people multitudes my age will never have the chance to experience.

During that trip back I watched this new Larry Flynt documentary called The Right to be Left Alone which was extremely inspiring. While he is definitely just the owner of some whore house that decided to publish a weekly listing of the girls working that week who's mouth and product came at a perfectly luckbox time....the action and reaction during that period of time (which I had no reason to be familiar with) was extremely interesting. I suggest finding a torrent of it somewhere on the interwebs. Demonoid is the best private torrent tracker if you have any clue about torrents, if not you can IM me but I'm not going into all that here.

Other than the internet bullshit and sitting around here catching up on season 2 and 3 of Entourage that Ptero left here on DVD while he's at APPT Auckland....not much else going on. Big shit should be happening later this week but other than that...just these. lawlstralia ftw.

Rabbit pot pie and back to 24 tabling

It's 145am here in Sydney and I just busted out of a few worthless donkaments on FTP I was fucking around in while taking care of emails and other business. I finally got back to grinding PS cash games last night and since then have cashed out a nice little $550 check to pay for this 3 day trip to Sydney from Newcastle. I really don't know what I'm gonna do with my current roll in 2 days when I start the 400nl stake but I'll either leave it there to make easy $ like I did the past 2 days or cash it out to spend or invest.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Tonight Ptero and I went to Sean's Kitchen for dinner at the Star City Casino. Not only was it the best value we've had for a meal since we got here ($110 for both of us at the nicest restaurant in the casino) but it was also the most enjoyable. The atmosphere was much like Prime, the steakhouse at Bellagio in Las Vegas (well as close as possible at least). I had a rabbit pot pie with green beans and potatoes au gratin which was all outstanding. After that I left Ptero at the casino where he is grinding 1knl with the biggest live poker monkeys I have ever seen. The skill level of poker players at Star City is unbelievably non existent. They seem to have no clue whatsoever. I got back here to grind online for like 4-5 hours now I'm gonna go out and find something to eat before coming back to grind some more.

Enter: Australia

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

That is the view over my laptop right now from my hotel room at the Ibis Darling Hotel overlooking the Darling Harbour in Sydney, Australia. It's Sunday morning at 3am here in Australia which makes it 1pm on Saturday on the east coast of the US (where I grew up). On Friday, after a phone call with Pacnet (my ISP in Newcastle), I found out Ptero and I would be without the internet until Tuesday which is......beyond unacceptable. Now normal people would have...well I just don't know (for obv reasons). Within an hour of hanging up that phone call Ptero and I were on a train to Sydney to check-in to our hotel room (with internet obv) I had booked and then put in a live session at the Star City casino. Since then we have both experienced some native Australian cuisine and spent a few hours today within arms length of Koala bears, Kangaroos, Wallabees, Wombats, and at least 100 other Australian native species.

Tomorrow morning I will board the train from Central Station in Sydney back to Newcastle Station and fuck around (aka probly find trees somehow) until Tuesday morning when the internet gets installed. Ptero will be staying in Sydney until he leaves on a flight to Auckland, New Zealand for a week playing the APPT Auckland event he won the package for through PokerStars APPT Steps (he is a PS Steps machine in case you are unaware).

Tuesday when the internet is installed I will begin a 50BI backing to 400nl on FTP. The backer is relatively unknown and will remain private until further notice, so don't bother asking. During the 3 months I am here in Australia I plan to play approx 100k hands/month and profit a minimum of $40,000 before rakeback and FT Point sales. I haven't mentioned this earlier to most people for several reasons but for anyone who is semi conscious will realize this is an enormous step in not only my poker career but also my life in general. As humbled as I am to have that level of respect I also realize that I did what I decided years ago I needed to do and become and elite NLHE player. Now that I'm here I still stop myself several times daily to realize how much better a life I'm living than not only my peers but also just a huge huge % of the earths population. I'm a relatively fucked up individual but like I've explained before in past posts in this blog....without question.....everything I'm not makes me everything I am.

This song has been owning my mind the past 24 hours. I'm mostly putting this here so I remember it later when I look back at this useless blog but if you get some enjoyment out of it well.....I don't really care to be honest.
