It's approx 1:30am in Las Vegas on Tuesday, September 30th, 2008. Tonight at 7:55 I leave from McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas and after almost 24 hours of traveling (air and land transit combined) Ptero and I will be at our beach house in the Newcastle suburb of Merewether.
Above is the exact address where we will be living on the NSW coast of Australia until December 20th when we fly back to Logan Intl in Boston, MA.
I have no idea what is about to happen other than I'm going to be making a shit ton of money while I'm there. I seem to uncontrollably crush souls with my subliminal megaballer mentality everywhere I go so I don't see Australia being an exception.
After having a ride from Bellagio to MGM in the larger version (LS600h) of the aforementioned whip, owning one of these will be right up near the top of my priority list. Which reminds me.....if you have any doubt whatsoever of my ability to use my mind to get what I want, please let me know, you'll be doing me a huge favor.....DUCY? (if not, refer to prostitution post for more hints)
I'm going to go run like dogshit in Chinese poker with Ptero and Coordi then pass the fuck out ASAP so I'm exhausted during this 14.5 hour flight I am not looking forward to later tonight. Fall asleep on a flight leaving San Fransisco connector Sept 30th....wake up October 2nd in Sydney, Australia....that's the plan.
Sept 30th 12:20pm EDIT: I did NOT run like dogshit in chinese. While ptero managed to crush my soul as usual, Coordi went on a megatilting chinese downswing (much like I've had several times over against ptero) ending up losing 20 points to me and 42 points to ptero at $2/point over about 15-20 minutes. Do the math and imagine what havoc chinese poker would wreak on the normal monthly income of someone our age playing $2/ point almost once a day, sometimes several times a day.

23rd Mehday and Mad shit to do
Its 8:15am in Las Vegas and I'm about to spend most of my birthday sleeping. I was on the phone with my father this morning discussing several things, one of which included this lackluster feeling I have about this birthday. Other than this being a completely useless birthday, unlike 18 or 21 for example, it's something else. It's the fact that compared to where I was even a year ago I am living the life so close to a daydream I would have had, the birthday feeling just isn't there. Birthdays are usually a nice outlier from the often (cognitively or not) miserable norm that they actually create a sense of enjoyment. In this case the joy I get out of every day of my life has created an unusual nothing feeling about this being my birthday, it's just another day in paradise.
When I wake up somewhere between 3 and 6pm I'm going to get my dry cleaning, have dinner at The Steakhouse in Circus Circus (which I've been told by several sources is the best steakhouse in Las Vegas) at 7pm then to Treasure Island to see Cirque Du Soleil's Mystere at 930pm. After that bomb start to my morning we'll probly play some cash games at the incredibly soft TI poker room before going out with the girls Ptero knows from Boston whom are in town celebrating a 21st birthday.
The next 72 hours contain several pivotal points including returning the Chrysler 300, getting the house back the way we found it, suspending my Verizon cell phone contract for the 3 months I'll be out of the country, calling a wireless internet service in Australia through Skype to schedule an installation for the day or day after we arrive, etc etc. There's probly about a dozen things total that I need to get done and get done as close to perfect as possible to get myself from living in a townhouse in Las Vegas today to living in a beach house in Newcastle, Australia on Tuesday (technically Thursday there because we gain approx 30 hours in time over the 14.5 hours flight from San Fransisco to Sydney, Australia which ends up meaning we leave the US on Sept 30th and arrive in Australia on Oct 2nd)....gl me

neutral expectation
no matter how many hands we play we are all so so so far from infinity that some of us are luckier/unluckier than others. i'm mid session right now so im not going into this too much further right now but in my lifetime i have missed out on more value than any other player i know. notice i didnt say i run worse. while i have (lifetime) run far far worse than the avg player, so have some others. i said ive lost more value because im better at nlhe than every player at my current limits. this isnt a rant and its not a needle, its just fact and i dont really need to prove it further than i have.

Normall 22 yr old's monthly salary = My tuesday night
I just finished 4th (card dead as fuck at the FT including a walk with KK and 88 in the BB obv) shoving QTcc into A5o SB to BB and having the luckbox fuck fade everything after a 6 K 9 8 board. 4th paid $4k but Ptero had half of me. In the past 48 hours I've made Ptero $2,200 for him risking around $250. We're going out to one of the 24 hours bars near our house now.
Oh and tonight I.....booked a townhouse on Merewether beach 5 mins from Newcastle University (where Ptero's brother is studying abroad), booked a round trip flight from LV to Sydney, Aus then back from Sydney to Boston Dec 20th, and a driver to pick us up on Oct 2nd and drive us to the airport on Dec 20th.
Catch me if you can.

Relaxing with some donkaments
Ptero's friend Arden from Houston, Texas left today and officially ended the 2 weeks+ of visitors at or near our place in Vegas. This morning we woke up to sweat CDL in the WCOOP ME where he cashed for I think about $87,000. CDL had been backing me in the Sunday Million (back before it was the S1.5M) until he apparently had some financial issues and it wasn't a worthwhile investment for him....when in reality I think he was just looking for an easy way to make some extra $ not thinking of what a high risk equity investment multi-table tournament staking is. So we had Jack in the Box for lunch, which was literally painfully to digest but necessary to try out all these random places you hear about from all over the country which Las Vegas obviously has all of.
So tonight I decided, after running bad in cash games and not having a level mindset to megamulti-table cash, I decided to just relax and play the $109 buyin $30,000 guaranteed on PokerStars. Ptero had been saying he would take half my action if I ever want to start fucking around with some donkaments so I took that offer. I ended up finishing on the fucking final table bubble in 10th for $490. I shipped ptero back $245 after he had shipped me $50 already and that was a decent makeup for running bad in cash games. Right around the time I finished that tournament Ptero had already won an APPT Auckland (New Zealand) Step 5 and eventually won the Step 6 for the $6,000 package. That is Ptero's 4th Step package since the beginning of the summer including LAPT Rio and Uruguay and the WSOP ME. He is a sick individual, to say the least, but he deserves it.
So I proceed to register for a $2 rebuy 2x turbo to the $475 mtt satellite into that same APPT Auckland event. Within 2 hours I had a chiplead more than double the 2nd in chips and took down the $475 W$. Obviously if you have any clue about the nature of a 2x turbo you realize I had to run decently well, which I did. I made a few hands and more or less let the other monkeys make mistakes until the final table where I ran them into the ground. Which reminds me, I lost KK to AK and 77 to 66 (river obv) aipf to the same fucking muppet in the $109 30k for a combined total of over 110k in chips when the final table chipstack avg was about 100k. So fucking disgusting how bad I run at showdown it's pathetic and somehow I still make a living from the game....thank non existant jesus for non-showdown winnings.
Overall decent day making a little over $700 from two tournaments and doing decent in cash games for the month. The talk of non-showdown winnings is reminding me of a legendary graph I posted on 2p2 back in the DonQeeHotay days which I will try to find and post here later.

Mathematical irrlelevance in the game of profits/losses
Before I go out to dinner at Prime, the steakhouse at Bellagio, I want to write up something about a concept I've been thinking about lately.
It should be relatively well known that the most profitable styles in NLHE are a evolutionary progression of the game. Meaning, the best way to play the game is to stay ahead of the mainstream and slightly differ from how most people play/think about the game.
Something I've been thinking about lately is how irrelevant mathematical sound bets can be. Before I go on let me say that in order for this to be profitable the hero needs to at least be significantly above average at postflop hand/range reading which is obviously player dependent.
Almost every player from the fish to the most solid regulars are somehow thinking of the optimal amount to bet on each of 3 postflop streets, whether they realize it or not. This is literally almost always a bet that is on the high end of the possible range of bet sizing. Whether it's a fish trying to bet way too much to force drawing hands fold (obv a fundamental misunderstanding of the game) or a regular trying to find that optimal bet to get value from the villain making a mathematically incorrect call.
I'm not the best at communicating my thoughts but I'll do my best here. Because near every player is used to this high-end bet sizing, betting smaller, like 1/3 pot for example....will induce huge mistakes from villains much more regularly than even the best players realize.
If you use this unusual bet sizing correctly, it can literally make mathematically sound bet sizing....irrelevant (in terms of profitability). Often when hero holds a strong hand on a draw heavy board...they will bet around 2/3 to 3/4 on the flop and then again on the turn. Instead, against certain villains, it will literally become more profitable to bet that same 2/3 to 3/4 pot on the flop as a cbet (which should be with almost hero's entire range) but then making an extremely unusual ~1/3 PSB will often induce action from a weaker end of the villains range which would normally be folded to a standard 2/3 to 3/4 PSB on the turn.
If you have any idea how the game plays, you should be beginning to realize how villain dependent this is. If it's a smart player, it may work a few times, but they will eventually catch on. This works more with poor players. Players who have called the flop with a draw, interpret your small turn cbet as weakness and literally hero's bet sizing will manipulate the villain's range into check/raising hands with drawing value or even showdown value and therefor making a huge huge mistakes with hands they would have easily folded to a 2nd street facing a postflop bet.
I don't really have too much time to go over this post right now but I feel like it's such a complex concept I'll need to go back over it later and organize the thought. For now I will leave it as is hoping it will at least get the point across to some who read this.
Anyone who understand what I'm talking about please do me a favor and post in the comments for this post with some constructive criticism as to how I can better layout this thought.
The concept I want this post to relay is this.....
The point of this game is to realize profit from players making mistakes. Making mathematically incorrect calls on the turn, with drawind hands or weak made hands, is so well known to be a mistake that it's become much harder to profit from these mistakes. Staying with the thought that the game is constantly evolving....consider making radically small bet sizing, which would be mathematically incorrect, in order to induce extremely profitable mistakes from villains ranges which would normally have made a correct decision (by folding) if hero had bet closer to a standard turn vbet. Even if the villain makes a call instead of a raise some of the time, while hero will be making a short term mistake, there will be real profit coming from the number of times where villains spew $ with a weak end of their range where they normally would have folded.....simply due to their interpretation of your small, seemingly weak, bet sizing.

Perspective manifests relentless motivation....imo ldo
I was just finishing up a solid 2k hands BE session (-5BI/+5BI) when I thought about a way of explaining one of the radical ways I look at things.
I've said in the past with no hesitation that I would kill myself before I got a job. I expect anyone reading this to be rational enough to not be emotional about it but instead logical. If I was working for someone making even $25/hr (reasonable income for someone my age) I would be constantly hounded by how similar I am to a prostitute. Not only would I be doing work all day every day doing something I don't want to be doing just for money....but prostitutes would be making significantly more money.
I realize this is, at the very least, a radical way of looking at things. A more immature WW would have used this to needle everyone who ever doubted my ability to become successful via unorthodox means. However, instead I'll use this to help explain how I've come so far so fast.
One of the few worthwhile things my father ever taught me was that perception is reality. Meaning that however I see things is as real as how someone else sees things. If someone sees working a job differently than me, their cognitive view of the same subject is equally as correct as mine. This doesn't mean, however, that they don't create radically different affects.
If I were to be complacent with working a job I wouldn't be where I am now. The fact that I have such intense hatred for working, or doing anything I don't want to do for that matter, is the EXACT reason I have so many people looking at my life in awe and jealousy. For the record I'm not saying this for egotistical reasons, like I said before, I'm doing this to help explain my POV for constructive purposes.
That fear I force myself to have of being anywhere near the mainstream literally manifests a relentless motivation. That motivation that hounds me day and night is what has put me so far ahead.
I'm not the best (yet) at communicating my intricate thoughts but I hope I made myself clear. More or less, I'm saying that my refusal to become complacent with following the mainstream is what has driven me to become successful. Poker was, is, and always will be a means to an end. If it wasn't poker it would've been something else. I don't know that such a ferocious motivation can be manifested in someone who isn't in that state of mind already but if this somehow motivates someone to look at things from a different perspective, I'd be extremely satisfied with this relatively useless blog.

I spent a lot of time thinking about what this represents. Harvard Law School Professor Charles Nesson introduced me to this as not just an optical illusion but as imagery depicting a progressive way of thinking, not only in law, but poker and life, as well.

Sick as fuck and lolfuckdonkaments
I just busted 13th of over 2800 in the $30k guaranteed on Stars. The cash is not even enough to get me unstuck from my cash game losses when I woke up this morning and the donkament took almost 6 fucking hours. Not pleased....
Otherwise I am starting to feel a little better from this cold I got 2 nights ago. I'm pretty sure it's a combination of playing live poker (dirty chips), being up all day and night with visitors here, and being at the Spearmint Rhino strip club for like 6 hours one night (clearly a germ haven). I was really pissed off all day yesterday because not only was I feeling like shit, but more importantly, I have no time to be slowing down here in the next week+. I should mention that while I was pissed off yesterday I did have a massage at the Bellagio Spa and see Cher perform at the Caesar's Palace Colosseum which was a decent show.
As far as the next week+ goes, I have a lot of shit I need to do close to perfect. I need to continue to grind cash games, finalize a 3 month lease in a luxury condo complex in Newcastle, Australia, while continuing to enjoy my time here in Vegas which is somehow now only about 2 weeks left.
Cash games went very well last week. I made a couple thousand in a very short period of time which was perfect timing for the visitors coming this week. Tomorrow at midnight 3 guys from my hometown in MA get here and I'll be picking them up at the airport. I'm sure they're staying at some mediocre hotel at best but it's good for me that they have their own plans as I really don't have the time to entertain anymore guests this week.
Other than being sick and having my family here the past few days really not much megaballer shit to speak of but now that they're gone and I should be feeling better tomorrow.....back to WW business as usual sooner than later.

Family in Vegas and L3S Interview PT1
http://3stacks.tumblr.com/post/50291207/interview-derek-scholl-part-1
My mother and her parents are here in Vegas for a few days. I've been really busy lately since Toomey and Charles got here last week and it's not gonna slow down until the 3 guys from my hometown in MA leave sometime early next week. I've been pretty sloppy with this blog considering how serious I planned on taking it. I'm gonna finish watching this episode of intervention I missed while at David Cooperfield at MGM earlier tonight. I had a sick dinner at Prime, the steakhouse at Bellagio for my grandfather's birthday tonight. My family is staying in a 2 bedroom/7 tv/5 bathroom suite on the top floor of Bellagio. The place is so sick it's beyond words. Hopefully after this next week or so I'll be back focused on my online poker career and tracking it here.

Visitors and 3 Stacks interview
It's almost 4pm here in Vegas and we just got back from breakfast at IHOP. By we I mean myself, Ptero, Coordi, and Ptero's 2 friends from Boston who landed here in Vegas last night. They just left with about 2 gallons of gin and tonic for the pool and I'm gonna shower and put in a session after this blog post.
This morning a friend of mine from my days at UConn, Luke Marlow, interviewed me for his blog, Luke 3 Stacks. I will link the interview later this week when it's been edited and posted. It was good to put into words some of the things that most people don't understand about what I do for a living. Not only that, but to have people outside of poker reading those things and if nothing else...do my part in spreading the word for legitimate online poker pros.
Tonight I'm going to have my AMEX Platinum concierge agent help us have a VIP experience at the single most prestigious strip club in Las Vegas.....The Spearmint Rhino. I'm going to shower and get on with my day now. I would like to have a better post for this but I'm just too busy this weekend.
Oh and before I forget. I'll be regging 400nl on FTP within the next 2 weeks and moving to Newcastle, Australia into a high rise luxury condo in early October....SHIP.

Poor life decision = Std WW
Last night while waiting for Coordi to finish a 200nl session at MGM I took a walk around to find some food. I ended up on one of the bridges over Las Vegas Blvd and ran into one of these scumbags handing out VIP cards for free just to make tips. Apparently Coordi was told these are the people to ask for certain things so I did and thing got out of control pretty quickly and could've been much much worse. Basically I did something that most people I know (or even that I dont know) would never do. It's pretty standard with the way I do things on a regular basis. I'm obviously aware of the potential risk I'm taking when I take them...I just seem to think I have a better likelihood than most people to get through tight spots which may or may not be true. Story explained below on AIM between myself and obv NFuego:
04:46] musicalshangrila: nah i got in the back of a coupe with a black guy and his spanish girlfriend driving a bright yellow chevy cobalt
[04:46] NFuego20: roflmao
[04:46] musicalshangrila: with a VIP ticket crackhead guy next to me
[04:47] NFuego20: damn you're balla
[04:47] musicalshangrila: in the back seat of this coupe completely stuck if they wanted to jack me
[04:47] musicalshangrila: i was driven into the ghetto of las vegas
[04:47] NFuego20: not coo
[04:47] musicalshangrila: into this alley pasts these dumpsters to see if the shades were open on the top floor of this shady apt complex
[04:47] musicalshangrila: the shades were closed so that apparently meant he was out of business
[04:48] musicalshangrila: so we drove to a gas station where i was told we were meeting "the real baller" to get the "bomb purple"
[04:48] musicalshangrila: im stuck in the back of this car with these life degenerates
[04:48] NFuego20: lol
[04:48] musicalshangrila: he asks me for gas $
[04:48] musicalshangrila: which was an obv decision
[04:49] musicalshangrila: then this shitty old silver pontiac with black tinted windows pulls up
[04:49] musicalshangrila: hands the guy who called him a bag who then handed it to me to check
[04:49] NFuego20: lol yeah dude you're lucky to be alive
[04:50] musicalshangrila: which was about 2.5g of beast trees with the organic blueberry smell stupid drug dealers spray on mediocre trees
[04:50] musicalshangrila: and i paid $100 for it
[04:50] musicalshangrila: which they told me was an 8th
[04:50] musicalshangrila: which is obv 3.5g
[04:50] musicalshangrila: so i just took it just to get to smoke a blunt and get this over with
[04:50] NFuego20: yeah, hard to bargain in that environment
[04:51] musicalshangrila: not before being the true WW and telling them this isnt an 8th at all and not even close to the quality worth charging $100/8th for
[04:51] NFuego20: they could be giving you dogshit and you kind of have to take it
[04:51] musicalshangrila: right
[04:51] musicalshangrila: but i still told him to his face it wasnt an 8th at all
[04:51] musicalshangrila: and hes like
[04:51] musicalshangrila: he just weighed it out its def 3.5
[04:51] musicalshangrila: i was like
[04:52] musicalshangrila: im sure you meet a lot of stupid ppl around here but i just happen to not be one of them, i dont need a scale or even eyes to know this isnt an 8th
[04:52] musicalshangrila: the crackhead VIP card guy was then like
[04:52] musicalshangrila: yea yea thats provbly like 2.5 but its still the bomb sticky purple
[04:52] musicalshangrila: lol
[04:52] NFuego20: lol
[04:53] musicalshangrila: so then they drive me back to where we left from
[04:53] musicalshangrila: and the crackhead i had told id give him $20 for helping me get the quality im looking for
[04:53] musicalshangrila: so i end up giving him $20
[04:53] musicalshangrila: and he showers me with these semi useless VIP cards
[04:53] NFuego20: lol
[04:53] musicalshangrila: for free drinks at the topless pool at Rio
[04:53] musicalshangrila: etc
[04:54] musicalshangrila: so i got some of those VIP cards stupid ppl think are worth something
[04:54] musicalshangrila: and like 2.5g of mediocre tree at best
[04:54] musicalshangrila: for $140 + risked wellbeing
[04:54] musicalshangrila: =
[04:54] musicalshangrila: poor life decision
[04:55] NFuego20: yeah, lesson learned

Rio's Voodoo and FKN AZNS
Tonight I had dinner with Ptero and Coordi and the Rio's Voodoo restaurant on the 25th floor overlooking the night lights on Las Vegas. This place, if you don't know already, is a top of the line restaurant with a mix of casual and formal that I quickly realized was their mark. While there is a dress code and a long line at the door when we left (even turning away a bride and groom from cutting the line on their wedding day) there was also live music and even a crowd singing happy birthday....definitely something you wouldn't hear at most formal restaurants. The 3 of us all got the Wagyu steak with truffle mac and cheese and yukon gold puree with salads/gumbo to start and deserts to finish. The food was outstanding to say the least...I would definitely recommend Voodoo to anyone visiting Las Vegas. The view from a window-side table(booked by my AMEX Platinum Concierge agent)definitely completed the experience.
After dinner we drove back to the house where Ptero and Coordi stayed at the house while I drove back to the strip to abuse some 200nl fish at the MGM Grand. The games there are absolutely amazing if you like easy money. I doubled an $800 stake from NFuego from 2p2 within 2 sessions and yet somehow I'm now stuck after 2 session running really bad. One of the few sessions I played I found 55 with my 99 on a 954 5 x board...sigh...1 outers ftw. Tonights 200nl session at MGM was especially disheartening as the table was very soft and as usual there was a spewing aggro asian just waiting to get owned by the WW. Instead this fucking joke had a horshoe up his rat ass and took about 2BI off me with AQ outdrawing my AK aipf and his QQ holding vs my AK aipf. This fuck was opening constantly and just playing HORRIBLE postflop. Every hand that made any pair or draw or any reason for him to stay in for any bet amount he would. Obviously I find a way to end up stuck 2BI to this fucking monkey and just to tilt the shit out of me even worse I hear him say to the other fish at the table as he hit n run he was going to go "lose it back at the roulette table". How in the fuck could people be so fucking pathetic. I'm finding myself being disgusted more and more every day with the way people conduct themselves and the way their allocate their time and resources. I just really have trouble wrapping my mind around how stupid most people are. Don't get me wrong...I'm extremely self-aware and while I consider myself to be of above average intelligence I'm no genius by any means. Where I make up for my lack of innate ability is my relentless drive to reach my goals and not let the temptations (esp in Las Vegas) throw me off course. I can't say exactly what my goals are specifically but if you know me already you should have and idea of what they might be and if you don't know me yet well....stay tuned.

Enter: Las Vegas
Last night myself and PS MSNL reg Pterodactyl landed in Las Vegas, NV. Over the course of the flight we played about 4-5 hours of chinese poker which resulted in me having a standard WW swong from being up 28 points then doomswitching when I let ptero change the game to $10 a point. I ended up stuck 57 point after being up 28...not happy about that, to say the least. Once we got our shit together we hit the rental car plaza where I proceeded to talk my way into saving over $1800 for the month and effectively paying a Chevy Malibu price to drive away with this
a 2008 Chrysler 300. Normally I don't bother saying things like this because it's not taken seriously but this kind of thing is exactly what this blog is for. The literal reason why I got such an unusually large discount on the car was because I knew how to adjust to the car rental agent. He was a middle aged guy, almost a little hippie-esque. I'm not the best at explaining how I act/react to things but I definitely get the job done when I comes down to it. I got a read on this guy to where if I level with him when I'm talking to him (about a # of things), after a long day dealing with the shitheads I'm sure he had to deal with, it almost forces their hand when you give them a refreshing experience within their daily repetitive hell.
We got to the house and both met (for the first time) PS SSNL reg Coordi who had flown in from Oklahoma City earlier in the day. Coordi, Ptero and I are all staying in a Las Vegas townhouse 5 minutes from the strip for at least all of September. Once we got our shit settled at the house we pretty quickly left to meet up with a group on online pros at the Rio including 2p2 regs Kos and winner of the PokerStar's Sunday Millionament....GoMuckYaSelf. We tried to get an 8 handed FR 200nl game but apparently the poker room didn't have the dealers to do it which sounded like bullshit but whatever. Ptero and Muck ended up playing some TJ Cloutier craps and once Muck rolled the 7 to clear the table we ended up sitting up in this lounge for the next few hours just talking poker. I'm pretty sure every one of us appreciated the rare occurrence that is having ppl who understand the seemingly gibberish online poker strategy discussion.
We got back and passed out around 6am I think and Ptero woke me up around 1:30pm to hit Whole Foods and the Sports Authority for groceries and tennis racket/putter. Ptero, Coordi, and I put in a solid session all in the same room for the first time tonight which is definitely +EV over playing in separate rooms. A little more tilt slamming than we're all used to but it was def an advantage to be able to consult each other (all good+ players obv) in real time.
I'm going to meet NFuego's friend's friend at Caesars Palace's Pure to pick up a 200nl live cash backing then see how the MGM 200nl game look before deciding to put in a marathon live session or not. Other than that...business as usual.
